Ioana Simina Popescu

Ioana Simina Popescu holds an MA degree in Sociology and Social Anthropology from Central European University and a BA in Anthropology from the University of Babeș-Bolyai. She joined the team in December 2024. Her doctoral dissertation expands her MA research to examine how Romania’s recent incorporation into the Schengen area is reshaping brokers’ labor recruitment and management practices, and how this, in turn, influences migrants’ strategies for emplacement. Her broader research interests include border and labor regimes, social reproduction, governance of migration, and racial capitalism. Driven by a belief in research that engages audiences outside academia, she is planning to turn parts of her PhD into a short documentary.
